Statement
My source material I have chosen to explore was viewing a movie that is called Get Out. The movie is based around a black man and his white girlfriend. A important fear betrayed onto the viewer is the betrayal of a loved one. In the evolving society there is more and more fears of betrayals and backstabbing especially from a loved one. Throughout my life I have seen many examples of this fear and it’s a very scary things to deal with. Another fear in this movie is the potential aspect of not being able to control your own body or emotions. The antagonists of the movie are a group of family members and a small cult like society of white people.
I really enjoyed this movie. It created a lot of suspense and want for more. During the movie I was always analyzing the behavior of all of the characters. I enjoyed how engaged I felt and how I felt trying to figure out the problems he’s going to face. The movie had different aspects from psychological, to violent, and even slight jump scares sometimes. I like all of the aspects they used in the film and think they all worked together to create an exceptional movie. I personally didn’t like the fact that they under explained why the servants were black. They explained it in a small 1-2 sentence explanation. Overall I enjoyed the movie and would recommend to anyone with interest with similar movies. I personally can’t think of anything to change that would positively change the movie or the development.
If they were to change the time period or the setting of this movie it wouldn’t give it a connected feel. As a viewer I can feel connected and that gives a horror factor to it. The setting gives it a deserted feel with the main character feeling distant to help and safety. He’s surrounded by woods and the families physical presents. Changing the time period wouldn’t give the view a genuine feel for the fears being betrayed to the viewer. Changing a character doesn’t seem necessary for any purpose because they all play an important role. One of the few downsides to a film like this is there’s no real way to make a sequel or follow up film.
An adaption I will be exploring is the idea of switching all of the characters skin color. This would create all of the family and “cult” members black and the boyfriend white. There would be many of the same thoughts just betrayed in the opposite way. I hope the potential audience thinks about why they decide to use white people as servants and what is the purpose of doing such things.
